Alberta's Distracted Driving Law
Effective September 1, 2011 Alberta's Distracted Driving Law (Bill 16) will go into effect. Here is a list of activities that will not be allowed while "driving. " It should be noted that "driving" includes stopped at a light or train crossing and illegally parked. So pulling over to take a call may not prevent the ticket:
-Talking on a hand-held cell phone
- Texting or emailing
- Using electronic devices (laptop, video games, cameras, MP3 players)
- Entering information onto G.P.S. unit
- Reading a book or magazine
- Writing, printing or sketching
- Personal grooming (combing hair, applying makeup)
- Using a CB radio
The fine for distracted driving will be $172. There are no demerits assigned. It should be noted that drivers can be charged even if their driving performance is unaffected by the activity.
Additionally, if their actions lead to an accident, the driver is eligible to receive a moving violation for careless driving which carries a penalty of $402 and six demerits. New drivers under a G.D.L. license should be particularly concerned as demerits result in a substantial insurance premium surcharge.
For safety sake as well as the comfort of your pocket book, if you have to make a telephone call wait until you arrive at your destination.
