How To Insure A Snowmobile

I recently bought a new snowmobile. But before I hit the trails next winter, I need to find out how to insure it. Is it covered under my homeowners policy?

No. Unlike, say, your cross-country skis or snowboard, your snowmobile is a vehicle. And even though you don't drive it on public highways as you would a car, you are permitted to cross highways with it. Therefore, you need a separate policy, similar to your automobile policy, to insure your snowmobile - or your motorcycle or all-terrain vehicle, for that matter.

Like your automobile policy, your snowmobile policy includes accident benefits and liability insurance, while collision and comprehensive coverages are optional. However, unlike a car, which is usually driven year-round, your snowmobile is used only in winter months. Therefore, the premium is generally directed towards those months.

Remember that any driving convictions - whether they be in your car or on your snowmobile - will affect both your snowmobile and automobile premiums. So whether you're hitting the road or the trails, play it safe and save money to boot! Happy trails to you!
